Customer Success Manager Interview: Live Churn Save Scenario (2026)

A CSM interview is increasingly scenario-based. VP of Customer Success gives you a live churn save: a hostile champion, a declining health score, a pending renewal decision. You have 20 minutes to read the signals, disarm the champion, rebuild the QBR narrative, land the renewal, and tee up a credible expansion hook. This guide covers the 5-round loop, sample questions, and a live practice room.

The 5-Round CSM Loop

  • Recruiter screen (30 min)
  • Hiring manager (45 min): Book of business background, segment fit.
  • Churn save live scenario (45 min): The round that eliminates most candidates.
  • Cross-functional (45 min): With Sales, Product, or Support leaders.
  • VP of CS (45 min): Strategy, metrics ownership, team fit.

The Live Churn Save Scenario

You walk in. The interviewer is playing your champion at a Series C SaaS customer. They open with: "Honestly, we are considering not renewing. Your tool is not delivering." You have 20 minutes. What do you do?

  • Step 1, listen: Do not pitch. Get the full picture. What changed, who is unhappy, what would fix it.
  • Step 2, validate: Acknowledge the specific failure points. Do not defend the product.
  • Step 3, investigate: Ask what success would have looked like 6 months ago. Compare to today.
  • Step 4, reframe: Restate the pain in business terms, not product terms. Tie it to the champion's own quarterly goals.
  • Step 5, commit: Propose a 30-day action plan with measurable checkpoints. Ask for a 45-day extension, not a yes on renewal.

Common CSM Interview Questions

  • "Describe the health score model you would build for a book of 50 accounts."
  • "Walk me through a QBR you ran recently. What was the outcome?"
  • "How do you decide which accounts to spend time on when everyone wants your time?"
  • "Tell me about an expansion you drove that was not obvious."
  • "Describe a renewal you lost. What would you do differently?"

What the VP of CS Actually Scores

  • Revenue mindset: Do you view your book as a revenue portfolio, not a support queue?
  • Data fluency: Can you read a Gainsight or Catalyst dashboard and act?
  • Executive presence: Can you hold your own in front of a CIO or CFO?
  • Coachability: Will you take feedback on a live call?
